I’m a certified food lover. I don’t mind splurging on food if the dining experience is worth every single cent. Unfortunately, my hometown does not offer “gourmet” dishes which tantalise the taste buds. It has been almost 9 months since I completed my studies in West Malaysia and returned home to work temporarily while waiting for my transcript; one of the things which I miss the most is the variety of dishes available in big cities. From the pricey western foods, gourmet delicacies, oriental dishes to the cheap and humble hawker stalls offering the signature Malaysian dishes... Even the mere thought of it makes my mouth water...
One of the unique features of Malaysian culture is the colourful blend of taste and the fusion of the variety of flavours to create a signature Malaysian “flavour”. It is a common sight to see the Chinese frequenting Mamak stalls, Malay or Indian restaurants and vice versa. I believe this is a feature which is truly Malaysia, the essence of our identity as a nation. It is confusing for me to categorise certain dishes to their respective ethnic groups because those dishes are such a significant feature of our daily lives that somehow each ethnic group has its own “version” of the dish. Malaysians revel in the opportunity to dine out at upscale restaurants, fast food joints or even the hawker stalls in their neighbourhoods.
There is a saying that goes “the way to a person’s heart is through his stomach”. Food unites people. A humble serving of the most commonplace dish can evoke wonderful memories associated with the particular dish. It could be a comforting homemade meal, a simple fuss-free snack or even an exquisite dining experience. Palatable dishes bring joy to our lives. For me, a hearty serving of my favourite food never fails to brighten my day and cheer me up. One of the items on my to-do-list is to embark on a journey to savour the delicacies the world has to offer...
I do not have many pictures of food but I managed to find some decent shots I took during my many food "adventures". I guess I shoud start taking pictures of each adventure now :P
Here are some pictures of my “food trail”:

Oh my goodness, I should not have read this on an empty stomach. Yum!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's true that Malaysians are having the privilege of having that blend of taste as you mentioned. We're multi-racial so that explains it.

ReplyDeleteagree that delicious food attracts, best will always be home cooked.
Locally, food can be found n abundant in the streets, but majority especially hawkers food are not "My cup of tea" and wont tickle my taste buds..
@Princess Zezebel: I do hope that you get you appetite back soon! There are just so many delicious dishes for you and your baby to savour...hehe
ReplyDelete@cookingvarieties: Thanks for the comment. I do agree that home cooked meals reign supreme. If you're lucky enough to find the right hawker stall, you might be in for a surprise. Some stalls offer delicious food at reasonable prices. I don't eat out at hawker stalls very often but some stalls are worth a try...
